The Brief

Katikati College is a coeducational Year 7 to 13 kura set in rural grounds in the Western Bay of Plenty.

The college came to us to evolve an identity that no longer spoke to the values and diversity that the school celebrates. The brief was to carry the values through the brand, be abstract enough that people carry their own meaning while being an identity holding mana for the students and wider school community.

The Work

We requested the school establish a focus group to construct direction and feedback on the process. In the focus group were the 2025 Head Students, staff and Board members and Louise Buckley, Tumuaki. Pou Arahi, representatives from the three marae, were also kept informed of the process.

The design captures all our the college values – Whanaungatanga (relationships), Manaakitanga (kindness and respect), and Kaitiakitanga (guardianship) – and our connection to the natural environment that surrounds us.

The four interwoven layers symbolise these values and the unity of our four houses. The woven bands reflect the interconnection between people, knowledge, community, and environment. The meeting points represent the maunga (mountains) and the College as a meeting place – a space where learning and relationships intersect.

Each layer also represents an element of our local environment, stretching from the Kaimai Ranges to the moana (sea) – the sun, mountains, land, and water – showing the flow of connection that defines Katikati.

The spaces between the layers represent Va – the relational space between people – a concept that recognises that the strength of our community lies not just in individuals, but in the relationships that connect us.

From the tohu we facilitated workshops with Katikati College Students to develop iconography. Students of all ages were encouraged to draw with stylistic influence from their unique culture, what the school values meant for them. We then combined these icons and styled them to create a unique pattern design. With the pattern and tohu created we rolled out letterhead, business cards, email signatures, signage, certificates and event banners, built as templates the school can run itself rather than coming back to us for every asset. A prospectus and International brochure was also designed.

The website is the other half of the job. More than sixty pages were consolidated into a sitemap built around the decisions families actually make, the build runs on WordPress with a redirect map so nothing the school already ranks for is lost in the move.

The Result

A brand that carries the values and celebrates the diversity of the Katikati community, one rich in culture and connection.

New website is coming soon.
